2015 - 2016 Academic School Year

posted Sep 10, 2015, 12:09 PM by Roberto Olono

As the new 2015-2016 academic school year begins, a series of different SHPE volunteering opportunities will also begin: SHPE Jr, Lego Lab, Noche De Ciencias, ACE, Industry Tour, and many more. Our community service board is working hard on planning out their weekly/monthly mentoring programs and we would like to create a volunteering list for anyone that might be interested in participating in any of these programs. If you are at all interested in learning more about these amazing community service opportunities or becoming an active volunteer, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We are always looking for additional help and welcome anyone that wants to help out our local community. For any additional questions, please contact Lorena Loucel at (Lorena Loucel)

SHPE Jr. 101

The SHPE Jr. Program allows SHPE members the opportunity to network with young high school students encouraging them to pursue future STEM college degrees and careers while gaining valuable leadership experience with planning, budgeting, facilitating, and public-speaking skills. The students are always excited to hear perspectives from different and new volunteers. The SHPE Jr. mentoring meeting format is 3 hours per month and includes recurring Professional Development workshops and STEM activities.

We currently host 3 SHPE Jr charters at Trinity High School, North Side High School and Trimble Tech High School.

Lego Lab 101

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 engages middle school students in computer science, science, technology, engineering, and math with this new hands-on robotics platform. Simple and Motorized Mechanisms: With this platform, students will build and explore machines and mechanisms, investigate motorized machines, calibrate and capture wind, and study gearing mechanisms.

We currently host one Lego lab as an after school program at High Point Academy.

Noches de Ciencias 101

Family Science Nights, hosted in the Fall, is a national initiative to engage the Hispanic Community in a relaxed environment to have fun with science, and engineering, and promote college awareness in a bilingual setting. SHPE student and professional chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico engage their local communities with activities for K-12 students and informative bilingual workshops for their parents. The goal of Noches De Ciencias is to broaden the participation of Hispanics along all segments of the science and engineering pathway.

ACE:

ACE (Advancing Careers in Engineering): IDEAS will be a one-day event hosted in the Spring intended to introduce middle school students to the engineering design process while sparking their interest in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The event will be held at a local area middle school which feeds one of our SHPE Jr. High schools.  During the program, the students will compete in two judged design challenges after a brief introduction session covering basic engineering principles. In the second design challenge the students will be asked to prepare a short presentation describing how their design meets the criteria set forth by the instructors.

Industry Day:

On an A-Off Friday held in the Spring, we provide an opportunity to our SHPE Jr chapters and Lego Labs to take a tour of our wonderful Lockheed Martin Aeronautics facility where they take a closer look at our F35 assembly process. In addition to our tour, we provide STEM workshops and lunch to our participants and volunteers.
